War in Ukraine

Edward Kaprov

Edward Kaprov, a Soviet-born Israeli photographer, documented the Russia-Ukraine War using the wet-plate collodion process (photography on fragile glass). This technique mirrors that of British photographer Roger Fenton, who documented the Crimean War (1853–1856)—the first war ever captured through photography. While Fenton relied on a horse-drawn carriage as his darkroom, Kaprov utilized a Ford Transit converted into a mobile laboratory. This early photographic method cannot capture the "decisive moment," yet it powerfully conveys the feeling that the nature of war remains unchanged throughout history
