In spectacular ceremonies of light and dark the worshippers in the Benedictine monastery in Abu Ghosh receive the holiday of Easter—the night on which Jesus was resurrected—and retrace with great precision the Israelites’ journey behind the pillar of fire. For them the light symbolizes Jesus’ return from the dead on the night when the pillar of fire banished the darkness of sin.
